Getting a Guiding Eyes dog is like baking a muffin!
I lost my vision due to glaucoma. They say when one door closes, another opens but now that I am blind I am having trouble even finding the door! I am so thankful that with my new partner by my side, I will just have to say “to the door” and when she stops, her pretty little nose will be pointing right to the handle so that I can easily locate the opening.
I was trying to explain the amazing experience of receiving a Guiding Eyes dog to the graduation audience last Saturday. Just to give you some background, I attended Johnson and Wales University and received an associate’s degree in culinary arts and then a bachelor’s degree in food service management. I love cooking and planning events and when thinking of my experience over the past few weeks, it hit me: getting a Guiding Eyes dog is like baking a muffin!
Here’s the recipe:
Step 1: Start with the best ingredients. Guiding Eyes begins with the best dogs, the volunteers are full of love, the facility is wonderful and the staff is so dedicated.
Step 2: Mix it all together. Guiding Eyes combines all of the ingredients and adds a few extra: patience, trust, education, and more love.
Step 3: Let it bake. The trainers have the dogs ready and the admissions staff makes our travel arrangements and soon we are all ready to begin the Guiding Eyes process of putting together new teams.
Step 4: Take it from the oven and let it cool! This is an important step and one that we all need to remember. When our Guiding Eyes dogs come to meet us for the first time, it is like a muffin straight from the oven. We are all so new and excited; the energy may be a little hot. We need to let things cool a little as we learn to work together.
Step 5: Enjoy! As I head home and leave the warmth of the Guiding Eyes campus, I am looking forward to a long partnership with my new dog. I can’t wait to see how many doors we can open together.
