Meet October Home Training Graduate Ibeth

Graduate Ibeth and guide dog TheodoreGraduate Team:  Ibeth and Theodore
About the Team:  Theodore, a male yellow Lab, is Ibeth’s 1st guide dog
Hometown:  Austin, Texas
Guide Dog Mobility Instructor:  Dan Weesner

Ibeth is a full-time graduate student at Texas State University, working toward her doctorate in Developmental Education. She also works full-time at the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center (CCRC), a vocational rehabilitation training facility that serves adults who are legally blind. She has recently partnered with her first guide dog, Theodore, who she has lovingly nicknamed Theo. Ibeth is pleased to have a guide dog who not only helps her travel in a faster and smoother manner but is a great  companion as well. Ibeth is looking forward to running again with Theodore at her side.

How would you describe your guide dog? “Theo is 2 years old and very sociable. He loves to interact with people and has a wonderful personality! He attracts people wherever we are. Theo also really enjoys working and puts his head right into the harness when it is time to go.”

What made you decide to apply for a guide dog from Guiding Eyes? “I did a lot of research and really liked the program Guiding Eyes offers. The Home Training program was excellent and convenient.”

How has having a guide dog impacted your life? “I have learned a whole new way of doing things. With Theo I can walk much faster and more directly than I could when using a cane. I have been rediscovering my neighborhood. He is also a wonderful companion. As we continue to get to know each other, we become even more of a team.”

Were there any training highlights? “Working with Theo was a whole new experience! When I use a cane, I am in constant contact with my environment, so when I first started walking with Theo, I didn’t need to feel for everything. My instructor, Dan has a great personality and made the training fun. We walked around campus and Theo and I learned our routes. He has quickly gotten very familiar with the building at school where I spend most of my time.”

Theodore came to me at about 13 weeks old and he was at the stage where his ears were so big and his legs were so long and he was just so awkwardly adorable. Little did he know that he was moving into life with an RM which involves so many classes and lots of travel. It took some time for him to gain the confidence he needed to travel but he had lots of wonderful sitters to help him learn and grow into his ears. Theodore is so sweet and willing to please and has always been so settled in the house but loves to run and play with other pups too. He really enjoys woods walks, boat rides, swimming and playing in the snow too. He is one of those pups that truly touches your heart with his sweetness and I am incredibly proud of this boy and how far he has come. Theo-adorable!!!
