Laundry and Dry Cleaning

We have laundry facilities at the school that you can use in the evenings or at weekends. We provide detergent and bleach, and we can arrange dry cleaning if you need it.

Mail

Mail is received Monday through Friday and will be distributed by your Instructor. A member of our staff or one of our volunteers will be glad to read your mail to you in private.

Your outgoing mail is picked up Monday through Friday. You can purchase stamps from the Reception Area.

Meals

We have great food at Guiding Eyes!

Our meals are served home-style with your classmates and instructors throughout your three-week stay. Our menus are designed to cater to different diets and personal preferences (including low-sodium, low-fat, and vegetarian). There’s great range and choice, and we’re happy to try to accommodate favorites and requests. You’ll find our meals healthy, nutritious, hearty, and lovingly prepared by our kitchen director and staff.

  • If you prefer to cook, you can use our kitchen.
  • There’s a fridge in your room for drinks and snacks.

Photographs

At no cost to you, Guiding Eyes provides:

  • A group photo of your class
  • An individual photo of you and your dog, with 8 wallet-sized prints. (Additional prints may be purchased through the School for $15 per 8 x 10; $10 per 5 x 7 of your class; or $10 for a minimum of 8 wallet-sized prints.)
  • A DVD of the graduation ceremony (sent within a few months after you return home). Additional DVD copies are available for $10 each.

Time Off

Guiding Eyes training occasionally involves waiting for other students, and you will have free time on evenings and weekends, so bring your knitting needles, paints or yoga mat, and enjoy your time off.

We have computers, Braillers, typewriters, some musical instruments, DVDs, and a small Braille and tape library. Some of our students like to record and re-listen to lectures.

Through the support of Club Fit, Guiding Eyes now has an on-site fitness center. The room contains free weights, a treadmill, elliptical trainer, arc trainer, and an exercise bike.

Volunteers are available some evenings to drive students who would like to go out for local recreation.

Support Groups and Religious Services

We can arrange for you to attend support groups or religious services of your choice so that they will not interfere with training sessions. Please let us know in advance so we can make sure we have a volunteer to drive you.

Shopping

Volunteers are available to do shopping for you, and some training trips take you inside stores.

Emergency toiletries, in small quantities, are available to you here at no cost.

Technology

Guiding Eyes will cater to your technology needs so that you can stay in touch with work, school, or family during your time in training.

Your dormitory room is wired for internet access on a laptop. Both our dormitory and White Plains training lounge have WiFi networks available for student use.

Telephones

The telephone in your room can receive incoming calls and may be used for local and long distance calls without charge. Let people know to call you after 8 p.m., when lectures are over for the day. We’ll let you know your phone number a week before you arrive for class.  Students can call anywhere within the US or Canada for no charge.  Our telephones all have a message service.
