After a life-altering auto accident in 2023, and the lengthy recovery that followed, Guiding Eyes graduate Jim McDermott found renewed freedom and independence when he was matched with guide dog, Keanu, a loving, yellow Labrador Retriever.
Their inspiring partnership was recently featured in Upworthy, highlighting Jim’s journey after losing his vision and how his faith and Keanu helped him regain independence, stay active in his community, and continue pursuing his passions.
After training with Keanu at Guiding Eyes in July 2026, Jim quickly experienced the impact a guide dog could have on his daily life. Whether shopping with his family, participating in community outreach, or visiting local schools and college campuses to raise awareness about blindness, Jim navigates the world with greater confidence and independence alongside Keanu.
