Elizabeth and Vernon

Meet Graduate Betsy

Elizabeth and yellow lab guide Vernon in their portraitGraduate Team:  Elizabeth and Vernon
About the Team:  Vernon, a male yellow Lab, is Betsy’s 8th Guiding Eyes guide dog
Hometown:  Somerset, New Jersey
Training:  November 2022 On-Campus

Betsy was a dedicated student and earned several degrees. She has a bachelor’s degree from Wilson College, did graduate work at Penn State and has a degree in Corporate Law from Adelphi University.  Currently she is retired from a career in business management and remains very busy and active. She sings in her church choir, a New Jersey state choir and is involved in many senior groups. Betsy enjoys spending time outdoors and with friends.

How would you describe your guide dog? “Vernon is 3 ½ years old and adorable! As a guide, he knows his job and does it very well. When he is not working, he is very ‘chill’. He can often be found curled up in his crate relaxing.”

What made you decide to apply for a guide dog from Guiding Eyes? “When visiting guide dog schools prior to getting my first guide dog, I was impressed by the hospitality of Guiding Eyes. I continue to return to Guiding Eyes as needed because the dogs are beautiful animals and competent guides. The Guiding Eyes staff is involved and very caring.”

How has having a guide dog impacted your life? “I credit my guide dogs with the independence I enjoy.  It is because of that independence that I had a successful and fulfilling career.  With my guide dogs I have traveled all over the country and continue to have many great experiences. I have even sung at Lincoln Center!”

Were there any training highlights? “I really enjoyed the small class size and the focused and individual attention it allowed. The training was just what I needed it to be.  Our trip into New York City demonstrated to me that Vernon is a ‘rock solid’ guide and that he handles all different types of transportation like a pro!”

From the Puppy Raiser…

Vernon was the first puppy I raised and I am so happy that he is graduating.  I’m very proud of him.  He is a good dog and he likes to be close to you and offer his assistance with whatever you are doing.  He also likes lots of cuddles, playing with his toys, and when you talk to him (about anything).  He is easygoing, adaptable, and will be good at trying new things and going on adventures.  He made a difference in my life and I hope he helps you as a guide dog but also as a friend.      ~ Matthew Nayda, Puppy Raiser
