Graduate Team:  Lilith and Jax
About the Team:  Jax, a male black Lab; Lily’s 1st guide dog
Location: South Kent, Connecticut
Training: July 2025 On Campus

Lily is continuing her education at Highlander Transition Academy after graduating from the CT Region 1 School District. She aspires to become a public speaker and is committed to advocating for individuals with disabilities. Excited to gain greater independence, Lily is developing her dog handling skills and forming a strong bond with her first guide dog, Jax. She resides in the village of South Kent in western Connecticut with her parents, younger brother, sister, and family dog. Lily enjoys singing and cherishes time spent with friends.

How would you describe your guide dog? “Jax is much more than a dog.  He has quickly become my teammate!  He is hardworking, and I know he is ready to keep me safe at all times. When he sees the harness, he comes running! When Jax is not working, he is a sweet, loving, and playful puppy. He has the kindest soul!”

What made you decide to apply for a guide dog from Guiding Eyes?  “I have had vision impairment my whole life. Since I was a kid, I have dreamed of one day having a guide dog.  In 2022, I got to work doing O&M training and learned to navigate independently using a cane.  With those skills, I knew I was ready to apply for the guide dog I always wanted.  Guiding Eyes is not far from my home. I was familiar with and admired the teaching methods they use.  I knew it was the school for me.”

How has having a guide dog impacted your life? “Jax has changed my life in the best way!  He has given me the freedom and independence I was seeking and need.  He fills my days with joy, confidence, and peace when I am feeling anxious.  My cane is an obstacle detector, Jax is an obstacle avoider. He gets me from point A to point B in a way that is both efficient and enriching.  Jax is a partner who believes in me!”

Were there any training highlights? “Overall, the weeks spent training were amazing and meaningful. The first time I walked with Jax in his harness was pure magic and my dream come true! I enjoyed the whole experience from training time with my instructors to quiet moments with Jax where we started building our bond.”

From the Puppy Raiser…

Although we’ve raised many pups for Guiding Eyes Jax will go down as our favorite. He was a delight to have join our family even for a short time. Jax learned very quickly so we were able to spend many days going to stores, parks and restaurants. We are so happy for you and Jax. We hope you have many wonderful years together. ~ Wendy Minke

He is brave. Enjoyed water and the kiddie pool and all of my dog Abby’s toys. Especially puzzles.  ~ Laurel Porterfield
