July 2024: All About the Whelping Kennel at Guiding Eyes
Guest: Veronica Fisher, Whelping Kennel Manager
We are excited to share another podcast by Catherine Fenlon, her 4th episode featuring Guiding Eyes. Catherine, who is entering her senior year in high school, developed an interest in podcasting and we are thrilled that she has chosen to raise awareness for our organization.
Catherine asked Veronica Fisher, the Whelping Kennel Manager, to be her guest for this episode. That choice was inspired by the family’s Guiding Eyes brood Juniper, and her recent delivery of the J24 litter on February 25th. Yellow Labs Juniper, (1JJ20) and Soldier (4SS21), produced Justice, Jackson, Jolly, Jubilee, Juliet, Jessica, Junior, Judd, Joker, Juan, Jetson, Jimbo and Junie. Ten are currently on program with their puppy raisers, and three were adopted to share their love as family pets.
… I love it when the pregnant brood comes in… feeling the puppies move around in her tummy. The birthing process itself is very rewarding… I love helping her get through that and seeing her snuggle up with her babies and love them. Also knowing that I’m helping provide a service to people who are visually impaired, it makes it all worthwhile.” ~ Veronica Fisher, WK Manager
Veronica discusses how she and the Whelping Kennel team provide care for the broods and their adorable litters of puppies. Present when they enter the world, WK staff are involved in the puppies’ first touch and their most basic training. They nurture and socialize the puppies to prepare them for their next steps. Veronica shares her affection for the pregnant broods that arrive with their volunteer fosters and tells of the constant care and monitoring the staff provides during the birthing process.

Catherine’s passion for Guiding Eyes stems from her family’s involvement with the organization. The Fenlon’s began volunteering in 2021 as Home Socializers, then became Brood/Stud Fosters, as well as puppy sitters. They are the fosters of breeding dogs, Juniper (1JJ20), a female yellow Lab and Ralphie (3R20), a male black Lab.
